Heroes FCBD 2012 mini wrap up…

I had a great time with some really talented and generous people this past weekend. I've always had fun at FCBD no matter which side of the artist's table I've been on…and this weekend was no exception! I shared table space with my fellow Sketch Charlotte cronies Herc Petmezas and Bridgit Scheide at Heroes Aren't Hard to Find in Charlotte, NC. Going in I felt a bit overwhelmed by being a guest at my LCS, but I hit the ground running and my table mates and the staff at Heroes made me feel right at home. I had an absolute blast drawing for everyone! Here are some pics from the event taken by Heather Peagler and a pre-event shot from Rico Renzi.

Special Thanks to: Shelton Drum, Rico Renzi, Herc Petmezas, Bridgit Scheide, Heather Peagler, Janis Renzi & Izzy, Shelley Drum and the rest of the staff and artists who made this such an amazing event! Also, thanks to all the great parents who brought their kids out to have a good time, it really starts with you guys! :)

FCBD at Heroes and the 2012 Sketch Charlotte Anthology

Gotta say that I'm pretty stoked to be doing another FCBD, especially at my LCS: Heroes Aren't Hard to Find! I've attended many a FCBD at the shop and it's kind of surreal to be on the other side of the table this time...can't wait! If you're in the area please stop by and say hello! There will be tons of free comics and incredible artists doing free sketches all afternoon!

The 2012 Sketch Charlotte will actually make its debut this weekend at FCBD! 24 pages of all new, all original material from members of SC. The best part is that copies will be free while they last! Contributors include Stan Ford, Herc Petmezas, Henry Eudy, Joseph Mitchell Jr., Adam Bastuscheck, Jeremy Brooks, Rico Renzi and Brandon Padgett with an introduction by Seth Peagler. Several members of Sketch Charlotte will be participating in this year's event!

Here's where we'll be:

Heroes Aren't Hard to Find
1957 East 7th Street, Charlotte, NC 28204 – (704) 375-7462
Guests include: Bridgit Scheide, Chris Brunner, Jason Latour, Herc Petmezas, Brandon Padgett

Borderlands Comics & Games

Hope to see you there!

AlphaBeasts - P is for Predator

Finished! I intentionally left the small "hairs" off his face and refrained from going overboard on the eyes. I thought there was a nice balance of black & white and I didn't want to ruin it by overthinking/overdoing.

This one will definitely be in the 2012 Big Dog's Studio sketchbook!

AlphaBeasts - P is for PREDATOR (WIP)

Thought I'd have time to finish this one today, but it's just not in the cards, hopefully I can give it the attention it needs to come together. I didn't want to rush this one, but I did want to get something posted. I plan on going back and re-doing a few (Rancor & Dai Tengu come to mind) once I get P & X done.

AlphaBeasts catch up!

So this is the last week of the mighty #AlphaBeasts. I went into this week being 6 down to finish the whole set. Most of me wanted to just let it go and see what was coming next, but a small part of me wanted to finish all 26! So against better judgement and a lack oftime, here's my latest attempt to catch up! I finished these four and at the time of this post I'm 1/2 in on the letter P...whew!

Charlotte Comicon sketches.

I had the pleasure of sharing space with the gang from Sketch Charlotte at last Sunday's Charlotte Comicon. For a pleasant change, I didn't get to spend much time drawing anything to scan and post online, but that was mainly because I spent quite a bit of time drawing for other people! Everyone was really great, and seemed to like their drawings. I took three pictures, but didn't get to take a picture of the great Mad Hatter that I did for Savannah, who also got the Esmeralda sketch I did below. I apologize for the blurry pictures, but these are taken with my phone, and this close up, it just gets blurry sometimes. Pretty soon, I'm gonna take an actual camera to these things to capture convention drawings.

Perspective is a Harsh Mistress

(Apologies for cross-posting this everywhere, I just don't know where people see my work, so I put it everywhere, and today I have a ton to do, so I'm even copying and pasting the text.)

The advantage to re-drawing about half of the Factor of 01 to be consistent in print format means I get to completely rework things I have not been entirely happy with. Originally the first panel, while it worked, wasn't entirely what I wanted. This is closer, and while I don't think I've got the handle on 3 point perspective that it demands, I think it's good enough to serve the purpose.

I also won't be replacing this on the web site until the next strip is redrawn. I've completely changed the beat of the action. That's the worst part of the original artwork. I really do not like staging fight scenes in my comics, so I do it badly. In the first Jet-Pack Jenny comic, there's actually two strips that were all black as a cop-out, albeit done on a dare. That second panel is also the second part of my lesson in how harsh a mistress perspective can be. Never ever say you can fix perspective in Photoshop, it will still not look 100% right.
